Makapu’u Point & Lanikai Pillbox Hikes
After Koko Head, we drove along the beach and followed Geoff’s recommended itinerary. This included eating some 7-Eleven breakfast items (don’t judge… they have legit food here. Normally I’d say never eat gas station sushi, but when they are 3 minutes from the ocean, they are the exception to the rule). We then stopped and checked out the Halona Blow Hole and Sandy Beach Park and got mad at ourselves a little for not bringing the boogie boards to try out the amazing waves.

The next stop was the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse trail. This was a much easier hike than Koko head, as it’s a nice paved path that winds up much more gradually over a couple miles. I still got cranky – again, with Mike, irrationally – because the trail sign said it was .75 miles to the top. I’m a delight to travel with when I’m tired.
We got to the lookout and the views were great. However, we wanted to actually see the lighthouse. We saw a hidden path down to it, and snuck on it (we swear, we totally didn’t notice the “no trespassing” sign until we were coming back). Unlike the main hike, this was right on the cliff which made it much scarier/exciting.
Our next stop and final hike of the day was the Lanikai Pillbox. It was much more crowded so we didn’t enjoy this one as much, and because of the close proximity to Koko Head and Makapu’u, it seemed like very similar views. However, I’d definitely still recommend it if you’re in Oahu – just go earlier in the morning to beat the crowds.
